Natural pigment (E160b) extracted from seeds of Bixa orellana (achiote), producing orange-yellow hues from bixin and norbixin carotenoid compounds. One of the oldest and most widely used natural food colorants, approved by FDA and EFSA; generally considered safe at typical food levels. Rare allergic reactions have been reported, mainly in aspirin-sensitive individuals.
