About

What to know

A monosaccharide found naturally in fruit, honey, and as a component of sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup. Unlike glucose, fructose is metabolized almost entirely in the liver rather than being directly absorbed by cells. Excessive intake — particularly from added sugars rather than whole fruit — is linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and insulin resistance.
