What to know

Vitamin B3 (nicotinic acid or nicotinamide); water-soluble and essential for NAD/NADH coenzyme function in cellular energy metabolism and DNA repair. Added to enriched grains and cereals since the 1940s to prevent pellagra; found naturally in meat, fish, peanuts, and mushrooms. At pharmacological doses (≥1 g/day) nicotinic acid causes skin flushing; amounts in fortified foods are well below this threshold.
